The Love Drums is the creation of Ed Haggard.
The Love Drums is a percussion ensemble that plays rhythms from around the world, especially west Africa. When they drum, people dance. Ed is a percussionist, drumming teacher and drum circle facilitator who loves to play. He began playing as The Love Drums in 1995. The group, now based in Lancaster, PA, just west of Philadelphia, rocked the Nashville area and many festivals for 2 decades. In 2014, Ed recorded an album called The Love Drums and he did most of the percussion. The album featured guest soloists Biko Cassini, Thomas Anderson and Dan Sherrill. The music has been streamed in over 60 countries. The Love Drums have performed in many venues: art galleries, hospitals, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival, The Barefoot Farmer’s summer solstice and autumn equinox festivals, Kinnection, Serendipity and others. The Love Drums performed at 99 events in Nashville called The Love Drums Community Drum and Dance WhizBang. This monthly event included a set by The Love Drums and a drum circle facilitated by Ed. The popular event often included samba style parades, belly dancers, flow and fire performers, singers, balafon players, gongs and singing bowls. The Whizbang was held in coffee shops, Unity and UU churches, Art & Soul and Ed's home, Paradise Village.
Ed's son, Edison, is a key member of the band and taught drumming at a Montesorri school in Nashville. Ed's grandsons are learning the repertoire and the youngest, at 9 years old, recently drummed in his school talent show. When Ed was 12 years old his dad got a Slingerland drum set. Ed cut his drummer teeth playing along with the records of Stevie Wonder, Trini Lopez and Jimi Hendrix.
In Nashville, Ed taught thousands of drum classes, facilitated many drum circles and performed lots of gigs with The Love Drums. Ed took Arthur Hull’s drum circle facilitator training and has had drum classes with over two dozen teachers including world class drummers like Mamady Keita, Bolokada Conde, Famadou Konate, Koungbanan Conde, Aly Scylla, Weedie Braimah and a dozen more teachers. Ed taught in many schools, teen recovery centers, boys’ homes, senior centers, churches and corporate settings. He also reskins and builds djembes and dunduns. His son, Edison, has been along on that ride. They love working and playing together.
